Micronesia, one of the three major divisions (with Melanesia and Polynesia) of Oceania, encompassing the islands of the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines, and for the most part north of the equator.

The more than 2000 islands include the Northern Marianas, Palau (Belau), the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Federated States of Micronesia. They have a total land area of about 2730 sq km (about 1055 sq mi). The inhabitants are primarily of Australoid and Polynesian descent. Guam is the largest of the islands, most of which are small atolls.
