Niue, self-governing island country in free association with New Zealand, in the South Pacific Ocean, situated east of Tonga. A coral island, Niue has an area of about 260 sq km (about 100 sq mi). Niueans are citizens of New Zealand; about three-quarters of all Niueans live in New Zealand. The largest village and best port of Niue is Alofi, on the western coast of the island. Major exports include copra, woven goods, honey, and fruit. Niue was sighted in 1774 by the British explorer James Cook, who called it Savage Island because of the hostile reception he had received. It was annexed by New Zealand in 1901 and became self-governing, in free association with New Zealand, in 1974. Resident population on Niue (1986) 2531.
