Taiwan Education

In the past decade, higher education in Taiwan has enjoyed rapid growth. The reasons behind this growth include the deregulation of education policy, prosperity in social economics, high level human resources available  domestically and abroad. Private Universities, out of their efforts and achievements, have earned the recognition from the public.

In the past fifty years, education in Taiwan grew at the same pace with its

economy. Before the society becomes rich, the government put lots of resources in promoting education at all levels. At that time, most universities were national universities. There were very few private universities then.  In the past ten to twenty years, private universities grew rapidly in Taiwan. Not only the number of private universities but also the student population in them increased. In the last decade, the national universities and  private universities both enjoyed growth and expansion.

According to the data of Ministry of Education the number of universities and colleges is 127 in 2000, while it was 105 in 1999 and only 84 in 1998. We can see the substantial increase in private universities and colleges. There were 74 private universities and colleges last year. We should also notice the decrease in the number of junior colleges from 3 in 1998 to 36 in 1999. And in 2000, there were only 23 remained. The rest of them have all been transformed into colleges.
