Elizabeth College


Elizabeth College is a co-educational senior secondary college for Years 11 and 12 with an enrolment of approximately 1200 students including adults returning to study. The college promotes high academic standards and provides a balanced program of cultural, intellectual, social and sporting activities.

Elizabeth College is often called the multi-cultural college. There are over thirty-five nationalities, including students from Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. We have a long tradition of making international students feel welcome and safe at the College.

LOCATION

Elizabeth College is a city college and is located one kilometre from the centre of Hobart, Tasmania's capital city. This provides many advantages close to museums, art galleries and libraries, and there are many buses going past the College.

FACILITIES

The College provides the latest facilities, which include:

  • Welcoming classrooms
  • Science and technology laboratories
  • Library with 50 000 books and Tasmania's largest collection of English as a Second Language resources
  • Houses the Tasmanian Aboriginal Library Collection
  • Staff and student common rooms
  • Gymnasium and weights room for athletes and sports enthusiasts
  • Over 300 computers of which 210 are for student use in specialist computer laboratories and classrooms. All students are given a password and account so they can use the computers at school.  International students can email family abroad at any time.
  • A performing arts Theatre which seats 170; dance, drama and music studios
  • Modern catering facilities including domestic and commercial kitchens with a student cafe (TANG) and a newly opened canteen which serves a variety of foods to meet all tastes.

LANGUAGES

A full program of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses is offered, from beginners to the level required for University. French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Latin and Chinese are also taught at different times.

ADVANCED ACADEMIC DIPLOMA

Highly academic students with excellent results can apply for this high recognition program.

ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS

The College has an excellent record in a variety of academic areas including English, Science, Maths, Economics, Chemistry, Debating, Public Speaking competitions and academic prizes.  Two immediate past students were members of the successful Australian international debating team. Several Rhodes scholars are ex-Elizabeth College students.

SISTER SCHOOL RELATIONSHIPS

Elizabeth College has sister school relationships with schools in China, Japan and Vietnam. Many international exchange students study at the College.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

This provides over seventy extra-curricular activities for students. Students who enrol in these can enjoy sports, games and social activities with your friends.

ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Serious athletes can train in a variety of areas including soccer, hockey, basketball and volleyball.
