The Graduate School of the Environment (GSE)

Macquarie University

The Graduate School of the Environment (GSE) offers postgraduate courses in environmental economics, education,  management, planning, studies, science, sustainable development, and wildlife management. The School was formally established in 1978 as the Centre for Environmental Studies. It became the Centre for Environmental and Urban Studies in 1982 and gained its current name in 1989. The GSE is the largest independent environment centre in Australia and is within the Division of Environmental and Life Sciences at Macquarie University.

The School's mission is to find integrative solutions to environmental problems. This is reflected in the teaching and research conducted. Programs offered are inter-disciplinary and are designed for students wishing to make or further careers in environmental fields. The School provides a focus for research and supervision in environmental studies by staff in the various schools of the University. It also conducts and promotes interdisciplinary research and encourages the inclusion of environmental considerations in decision-making by government, industry and the community.

The School has a complement of ten core academic staff and draws upon external professionals and staff from other Schools in the University. This allows a comprehensive program to be offered covering the natural, social and technical sciences.

All full-time research students are provided with office space and computing facilities. Conference participation is encouraged and material for thesis manuscript preparation are also provided. The GSE has 2 small operational laboratories: one for working on wet samples and the other for dry material. The GSE owns two boats and a 4WD vehicle for use on field work. There is ARCVIEW 3 GIS software; photographic and underwater video capabilities, radio tracking equipment and water quality testing equipment.

Coursework students may also be allocated space to work as available and limited access to computing facilities.
