Study Health Research Menzies School of Health Research Australia Menzies School of Health Research is an independent research organisation which has research progams focused on Indigenous, tropical and remote health. It is the focal point for medical research in northern Australia. The mission of MSHR is to improve the health of people living in northern and central Australia, and regions to the near north, through multidisciplinary research and education. MSHR was established in 1985 as a cooperative endeavour between the Menzies Foundation, Northern Territory Government and the University of Sydney. Additionally, MSHR is incorporated under Northern Territory legislation and controlled by an independent governing board. MSHR reports to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly through the Minister for Health and Community Services, and also to an annual general meeting of the School. MSHR is based in Darwin, on the grounds of the Royal Darwin Hospital, with a smaller unit in Alice Springs, co-located with the Centre for Remote Health

A range of short courses
The Menzies School of Health Research is committed to increasing the
opportunities available for postgraduate training for health professionals
and for health education and training for Aboriginal people and the wider
Northern Territory community. The research and education programs of the School are particularly
concerned with Aboriginal health issues, health in rural and remote areas
and in tropical or developing countries.
Public Health Coursework
Degrees in public health are accredited by the Charles Darwin University
and have been delivered by the Menzies School of Health Research since 1994.
The multidisciplinary nature of the program and the diverse backgrounds of
the lecturers and students results in a program which contributes to the
broad view of public health that is maintained by the School. Public Health Teaching
The courses comprising the Public Health Coursework Program are offered
through distance education. Enrolments since 2000 have included
international students with some of these students travelling to Darwin and
others electing to study in their own countries. Our collaborative working
arrangements with the Flinders University of South Australia, University of
Queensland, the University
of New South Wales and the Centre for Remote Health in Alice Springs have
contributed to the coursework program and helped to strengthen our links
with these organisations.
Research Training
The Menzies School of Health Research (MSHR) is committed to increasing
the opportunities available for postgraduate training for health
professionals and for health education and training for Aboriginal people
and the wider Northern Territory community. The research and education programs of MSHR are particularly concerned
with Aboriginal health issues, health in rural and remote areas and in
tropical diseases. The academic standing of the Menzies School of Health Research was
originally derived from its status as an extramural department of the
Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sydney. Our postgraduate students
now enrol through Charles Darwin University. Student
research projects cover a broad scope from molecular biology to population
health and health policy. Postgraduate research students are supervised by senior staff of MSHR and
external supervisors when appropriate.
Courses on Offer
The Menzies School of Health Research will work across
the higher education sector so that research students have
the best supervisors for their projects. Students
undertaking their research at MSHR must have at least one
MSHR supervisor.
