The British School in Baku was established in September 2007 offering students from Year 1 until Year 12 British education. The school is accredited by the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan and is a recognized Cambridge center.
The School is organized into Primary and Secondary. There are two streams in Primary and Secondary: International and British.
Both streams follow the English National Curriculum, the curriculum for pupils in schools in England and British schools abroad.
The Primary School: In the British Stream pupils begin at the Reception Class (age 4) and progress to Year 6 (age 11). The International stream is from Year 1 (age 5) to Year 6.
As pupils reach Year 2 they will take the SATs (Standardized Assessment Tests), and these are taken in each year until Year 6. These tests are the ones taken by all pupils at school in England, and the results allow comparison between the school and pupils in the UK.
The International Stream includes a programme of Azeri Studies for Azeri national students; it is taught by a team of Azerbaijani teachers under British expatriate leadership.
The Secondary School: All students in the Secondary School are being prepared for public examinations set and marked by Cambridge International Examinations, the world's leading provider of British-system international examinations. The students in Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9, ages 11 to 14) are prepared for the Cambridge Checkpoint examination in English, mathematics and science. At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11, ages 14 to 16) students prepare to take up to eight subjects in the Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) programme. Students in the new Open-Access Sixth Form have now commenced study in up to four subjects at AS and A Level to qualify them for entry to British and other universities worldwide. The Cambridge Code of the British School in Baku is: AZ003.
