International School, Dhaka

The International School, Dhaka is a co-educational day school founded in 1999 and built to accommodate students from Nursery to Grade 12. The school seeks to provide a high-quality English-medium international education for a largely Bangladeshi student body, as well as cater for the expatriate population. Officially opened on 1 September 1999, the school will admit students between the ages of 3 and 16 for the academic year 2004-2005. The school will expand to grade 12 by 2006. Both expatriate and national students are welcome to join ISD. CIS is contracted to manage the school which occupies an attractive 5. 5 acre campus in the new residential district of Basundhara to the north of Dhaka. The purpose-built, centrally air-conditioned facilities include the Early Years Centre, Primary Years Building and Senior School Building which together house all the classrooms and specialist teaching rooms, including science laboratories, design and technology laboratories and computer suites. Other facilities include an automated library, a sports hall/gymnasium, heated swimming pool, auditorium, cafeteria, playing field, tennis courts, basketball courts and playing areas. The school's curriculum seeks to utilize the three programme frameworks of the International Baccalaureate Organisation and is currently authorized to offer the PYP and MYP programmes. It is the school's stated aim that a large proportion of its students will be able to participate successfully in the IB Diploma programme, regarded as a benchmark for the school. For this reason the school is selective. Active participation in all aspects of the various school programmes is valued, and students are encouraged to become involved in the extensive after-school programme, and in community service projects. Faculty members are qualified expatriates, principally from Australia and the UK. ISD runs a September to June academic year, and a Sunday to Thursday working week. The school is secular and all members of the school community are expected to show respect for and tolerance of others, regardless of their gender, race or socio-economic background. The school is recognized by the Bangladesh Ministry of Education and is accredited by CIS. Address
