Learning Support Programme
St. John's International School was established in 1964 by a congregation of Catholic sisters in response to a request from the English-speaking business community. In the decades since, it has evolved into a comprehensive PK - grade 13 institution, which emphasizes ecumenical Christian values, encourages academic excellence and stimulates social development within a culturally diverse environment. Students from all faiths are welcome and are represented in the student population.
The Elementary School offers the Primary Years Program and a program comparable to that of schools in the United States and Britain. Students follow a continuous-progress system of learning in which each child is encouraged to work at his or her own pace. French is taught daily from Kindergarten up. Computer instruction begins in Kindergarten. The Middle School includes grades 6, 7 and 8. Students are organized into teams and there is a teacher-advisor program. Students opt for a second foreign language in grade 8. The High School has a strong academic program that is driven by the IB Diploma. Students are prepared for the American Diploma, Advanced Placement, and the International Baccalaureate. St John's is accredited by the Middle States Association and the European Council of International Schools.
All teachers hold appropriate degrees, the majority of them Masters degrees, and are fully qualified as teachers. Previous teaching experience is required and the average experience is 12 years. Sixty-five percent are from the USA and UK, 25% are Belgian and fourteen other nationalities are represented.
This year the student body registers 28% US, 12% British, with some 58 other nationalities represented. About 95% of the graduates enroll in colleges and universities of their choice in the USA, Canada, Britain, continental Europe and worldwide.
Regular field trips and strong athletics and fine arts programs play an important part at St John's. The school is a member of ISST and ISTA.
The school is housed in modern buildings containing 50 classrooms, three libraries, one cafeteria, seven science labs, five computer labs, an Art Studio, a Performing Arts Centre and three gymnasia. Students requiring boarding are placed with host families.
