The Psychology teaching programme and the Neurosciences Research Institute are part of Aston’s School of Life & Health Sciences, combining an internationally recognised research profile with excellence in teaching to provide a unique forum for the advancement of knowledge.
Research in the School covers a broad range of areas including the neurosciences, psychology, audiology, optometry and pharmacy, with over 80 academic staff and with substantial grant income. The newly completed Aston Academy for Life Sciences is a nationally unique research facility that includes centres for clinical neurophysiology, neuroimaging, paediatric cochlear implants, cornea and refractive surgery, and assessment of developmental disabilities. The Neurosciences Research Institute was awarded a grade 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, confirming that our research is of an international standard.
Masters in Psychological Research Methods
The Psychology teaching programme in conjunction with the Neurosciences Research Institute (NRI) and The Aston Academy of Life Sciences is now offering a Masters in Psychological Research Methods with specialisation in the following areas:
The programme is designed in a modular format to provide advanced training and practical experience in one of these areas, but also focuses on providing skills for career and professional development. It would therefore be ideal for students who wish to eventually pursue a PhD or for those that wish to take advantage of the opportunity for additional training to aid career development, either in the Health services or more generally.
There are 5 core modules common to all of the courses:
Candidates also complete an Advanced Topics course that provides the opportunity for in-depth study and practice in one of the four focused research areas. Students then have the option of tailoring their degree programme by competing research rotations and the dissertation projects in specific laboratories to achieve MRes degrees with specialisation in one of the following areas: Neuroimaging, Qualitative Research Methods, Sensory and Perceptual Systems, Cognitive Neurosciences. The taught part of the course could be completed without the dissertation project for a Post-graduate Diploma in Psychological Research Methods, with specialisation in one of the four core areas. The MRes will normally take 12 months of full-time study (24 months part-time) to complete.

MSc/PGDip/PGCert in Rehabilitative Studies (Audiology)
These flexible, modular programmes aim to provide an academically rigorous awareness of the concepts, theories, and practice of rehabilitation. It will introduce the student to the application of rehabilitative theory in a range of healthcare situations, with an emphasis on the psychological principles that are relevant to the rehabilitative process.
The MSc programme also provides students with the opportunity to participate in the flourishing Life & Health Sciences research community through completion of an original research project.
