SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND DESIGN Brunel University
The School of Engineering and Design is one of the largest and most successful engineering and design Schools in the UK, providing a wide range of exciting, forward-looking undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Recognised as a centre of excellence in engineering and design with a strong focus on modern science and technology, the School has an international reputation in research and prides itself on high quality teaching supported by excellent research facilities. The School's high reputation has led to extensive and close collaborative links with industry. These links and the sandwich placement scheme for undergraduates and industrial links at the dissertation stage for postgraduates have meant that the School's graduates are highly sought after as employees. The School has 4 academic subject areas : Advanced Manufacturing & Enterprise Engineering, Brunel Design, Electronic & Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Teaching and facilities were rated "excellent" in the last independent assessment. Facilities include modern, well-equipped engineering, design and computer laboratories, motorsport workshops and wind tunnels. For students on the aviation, aeronautics and aerospace courses there is a state of the art flight simulator with a VTOL facility enabling the testing of project and design work in a practical setting. Also BITlab is a new post-graduate research area, completely redesigned and built from a former engineering workshop. It boasts some of the worlds most advanced visualisation and multimedia equipment, available for various post-graduate research projects currently continuing with the School of Engineering and Design. Brunel Engineering and Design courses feature high in UK league tables In The Guardian University Guide 2009 Design ranked 2nd and General Engineering featured 6th in the UK, out of over 100 universities. A recent league table in The Independent also rated Brunel Design as 2nd in the UK. In the current Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of academics in the School achieved international standard, with 100% achieving this level in General Engineering. General Engineering at Brunel is ranked 5th in the country and Mechanical Engineering is ranked 8th in the country by Research Power. Many undergraduate courses are accredited with UK professional organisations including the IMechE, the IET and the Institute of Engineering Designers. Applicants completing some of the IT related programmes may also apply for membership of the British Computer Society. A number of postgraduate courses enjoy accreditation and approval status with, for instance, the IMechE and CIBSE and other courses are in the process of seeking accreditation. We are also very proud that in the most recent student satisfaction survey the most satisfied students in the UK in Design studies are those that studied at Brunel, as published in the Times Higher Education Supplement in September 2007. This encompasses both the Design courses and the digital media courses within the School (BSc Multimedia Technology and Design). Teaching on the Building Services Engineering courses have also recently been commended. The courses received the Happold Brilliant Award for teaching excellence by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. The School has a thriving student population with approximately 1600 undergraduate students, 550 postgraduate taught students, 300 research students and fellows and 110 academic staff. About the University Brunel University was granted a Royal Charter in 1966, named after the famous Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the University enjoys a current student population of approximately 14,000. Excellent location: Brunel is excellently situated 17 miles to the west of Central London and enjoys easy access to the city centre (1 hour on the underground Metropolitan line from the nearest town Uxbridge). The University is close to the London Heathrow Airport (20 minutes by car) and has close motorway links to the rest of the UK (within 15 minutes you have access to the M25, the M40 and the M4.) where you might travel to all parts of the UK. At Brunel you have the best of all possible worlds. Integrated campus: Brunel University has an integrated campus where you can study, eat in the many restaurants, play sports, relax in the student union and finally rest, all within 7 minutes walk. Many universities cannot offer this integrated and safe campus atmosphere. Sporting facilities: at Brunel you can enjoy almost any sport that you can imagine. Indeed we have been proud to be the host University to many world-class athletics and sportsmen and women in the last 5 years. In respect to sports, we have in the last two years invested millions on sporting facilities including a fitness centre and Olympic indoor running tracks, facilities that helped London secure the 2012 Olympic games. The Sunday Times recently said Brunel University had the best sporting facilities of all London Universities. A supportive global community: Brunel University is proud that we have students from over 115 overseas countries. Whilst studying at Brunel you can meet students from many different cultures and countries. We also have a dedicated Graduate School with excellent facilities for exclusive use of our many students
