the largest teaching, research and clinical department in the United Kingdom
providing courses leading both to registration as a practitioner in
speech and language therapy and post-registration opportunities for a
range of professionals working in communication disability.
We are a dynamic and
forward thinking department in which contributions to professional
developments, teaching and learning, research and clinical application
are flourishing. Staff are committed to providing high quality,
research-informed teaching in which theoretical and scientific rigour
are given equal prominence. We have established a
strong reputation for our innovative approach to education and clinical
practice: we were the first speech and language therapy department to
develop both a postgraduate route to qualification, a masters course for
practising clinicians and an on-site clinic. The close link that
it has always made between theory and practice remains, and its
long-standing commitment to improving public awareness of communication
disability continues to motivate staff and students alike. Department of Radiography The Department of Radiography at city University offers a wide range of courses. Department of Optometry and Visual Science The Department, through its research, aims to increase knowledge of the visual system in relation to both (i) human disease, with a view to alleviating pain and suffering and improving the quality of life, and (ii) fundamental visual mechanisms. All members of staff are expected to participate in research both through their own work and by the supervision of postgraduate students. The Department furthermore aims to provide the training and education needed to pursue successful and independent research careers. All research is performed under the auspices of the Applied Vision Research Centre. The research is monitored by the Departmental and University Research & Ethical Committees, and conforms to the ARVO guidelines on research and to the declaration of Helsinki. The Department aims to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education and clinical/professional training which meet the requirements of the College of Optometrists and the General Optical Council. Graduates of the undergraduate course will be able to demonstrate practical skills in performing efficiently a complete eye examination routine, with expertise in the use of a wide range of diagnostic equipment. They will be thinking practitioners with the ability to interpret logically the results of clinical tests, leading to the formation of a patient management plan. In addition, graduates will possess the theoretical and clinical knowledge required to meet the future expansion of optometry into shared care/co-management schemes. The Department is committed to providing opportunities for lifelong learning, continuing professional development and advanced study. Our postgraduate Certificate and Masters programmes aim to produce practitioners who can demonstrate the possession of new and up-dated scientific knowledge in the relevant optometric field. They will have acquired knowledge and experience of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and equipment. St Bartholomew School of Nursing & Midwifery The St Bartholomew School is expanding its connections with other Nursing and Midwifery schools around the world for mutual benefit from shared experiences and common goals of excellence in health care education and practice. These links allow academic staff to develop educational and research links, thereby enhancing the quality and perspective of teaching and research in the School. They also benefit the students of the School. Links abroad allow students to participate in exchange visits, students gain experience within clinical areas and cultures which enhance the quality of their education. Using the Know How Fund, the School is progressing with a long term project with school number 1 - St. Dimitri School of Nursing in Moscow, to develop curricula for nurse training and assist with strategic planning and policy.
