The English Studio started in 1997.

Our aim was exactly the same as it is now:

to establish a school whose students and teachers are valued and respected. We want to give:

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

The English Studio offers a range of full and part-time courses; from complete beginners to proficiency level. Lessons focus on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, with the aim of developing students’ speaking, writing, listening and reading skills. Each level (described below) takes an average of 3 months full-time study to complete. We operate continuous enrolment so you can start and finish when you like. We encourage students to take universally recongnised exams to help them find employment in the U.K.

 

 

Elementary

  • This course teaches students to:

  • Talk about basic events in simple present, past and future tenses.

  • Ask and answer basic questions.

  • Survive in authentic situations in London e.g. shopping, using public transport.

  • Fill in application forms.

  • Read and understand signs and brochures.

  • Write a short letter.

 

Pre-Intermediate

 

This course builds on the previous level so students can:

  • Talk about events in the present, past and future using a variety of tenses and vocabulary e.g. present perfect and past continuous.

  • Express opinions, make suggestions and agree/disagree.

  • Speak confidently on the telephone.

  • Write informal letters.

  • Read and understand simple texts.

 

Intermediate

  • By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Use grammatical forms and vocabulary from previous levels with more confidence.

  • Use grammatical forms such as the passive, conditionals and modal verbs.

  • Identify differences between formal and informal English.

  • Write informally for a variety of reasons.

  • Read and understand more complex texts including some authentic material.

  • Listen to and understand simple native conversations.

 

Upper Intermediate/First Certificate

 

This course prepares students to take the F.C.E. exam and enables students to:

  • Understand and use complex verb patterns e.g. combining verbs and prepositions.

  • Read and understand authentic texts in general and in detail.

  • Write formally and informally.

  • Speak for extended periods about themselves.

 

Advanced

 

This course prepares students to take the Cambridge Advanced and/or I.E.L.T.S. exams and enables students to:

  • Use language already learnt with more confidence and in greater depth.

  • Write in a range of styles e.g. formal letters, articles, reviews and reports.

  • Produce written English of the standard expected to follow courses at University.

  • Speak and write more interestingly. Understand most authentic texts and dialogues.

  • Give a typical business or academic presentation.

 

Proficiency

 

This course prepares students to take the Cambridge Profinciency Exam and enables students to:

  • Speak with near native fluency.

  • Produce written English of the standard expected to follow courses at University.

  • Present proposals and written arguments with force.

  • Read, analyse and write critiques of complex texts.

  • Detect differences of meaning in similar words and to use them appropriately.
