The American School of Douala

Founded in 1979, the American School of Douala (ASD) is an independent coeducational, non-sectarian school, which provides an English language educational program from pre-school through tenth grade.The school is located in the suburbs of Douala City. The facility includes 13 classrooms, a library, science laboratory, a well-equipped IT laboratory and an auditorium, which is used for school assemblies and productions.A small soccer field, basketball/volleyball court and playground area are available on the grounds.The academic year is divided into quarters, which extend from early September to late June. The total number of student days per year is 180.The curriculum is mainly American to grade 6. Grade 7 to 10 students are offered a blend of the best of American and European educational systems. Grade 9 and 10 students are prepared for the University of Cambridge IGCSE examinations, which are administered between April and June in the 10th grade.Subjects studied include: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music and physical education. French is taught as a second language.English as a Second Language is taught to students who do not have proficiency in English upon admission. A reading support program is also offered.Extracurricular curricular activities: Taekwando, ballet, cross-stitch, chess, science and design, music classes: piano, guitar and flute. A culturally diverse student body and faculty promote cross-cultural relations and exchanges, which enrich and expand global sensitivity and perspective.
