The University of British Columbia
ENSURE UNDERGRADUATE SUCCESS
As students graduate from their secondary-school programs, they often
find the transition to university studies much harder than they imagined.
Undergraduate students struggle with the academic, social and organizational
requirements needed to succeed. When these university-level studies happen in a
foreign country with an unfamiliar culture, even students with strong language
skills can struggle to adapt successfully. The University of British Columbia
(UBC) has specially designed the Intercultural Communication Advancement Program
(iCAP) to meet these needs. It is a program designed to assist students from
outside of Canada to prepare for the demands of undergraduate study at a Western
university. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Intercultural

Our full-time program helps students improve the intercultural communication and
critical thinking skills of international students as they study academic
content in a range of fields. Students enroll in four academic courses chosen
from the fields of Arts, Business and Science and study within a framework that
explains North American academic culture and expectations. The program also
anticipates students’ needs by adding a term of pre-sessional English language
training so that any lack of language fluency will not slow them down. Each
student is assigned a mentor to support him or her during this time away from
home, and each student can take advantage of a placement service to help them fi
nd an appropriate undergraduate program when they are ready to graduate from
iCAP. This combination of academic and skills- based training is ideal for
students looking to ready themselves for the academic and cultural demands of
studying in an international setting. In short, iCAP prepares international
students for success in today’s global economy. Even better, this non-credit
program is o ered by one of the world’s top universities: The University of
British Columbia.
