The Centre linguistique Montmorency international (CLMI) is part of Collège Montmorency, a Québec community college founded in 1969. Located in the city of Laval, the CLMI rests literally in the shadows of the beautiful Laurentian foothills just north of Montréal, the second largest French-speaking city in the world.

Our immersion programs of 18 or 25 hours per week offer you friendly, comprehensive language training complemented with a variety of unique cultural, sports and sightseeing opportunities.

• Placement test and certification

The placement test is divided into three parts:

1.      An evaluation of the student's oral comprehension and oral production. This evaluation takes the shape of an interview during which the person responsible for the evaluation will ask general questions to the student in order to determine his/her level of competence in the area of oral interaction.

2.      An evaluation of the student's written comprehension. The student will undergo an exam during which he/she will have to answer some questions that will test his/her knowledge of grammar and overall comprehension of a short text.

3.      An evaluation of the student's written production. The student will write a short text on a predetermined subject.

The student will have a limited time to undergo the placement test.

The level of competence in French as a second language is assigned following the scale of Niveaux de compétence en français langue seconde pour les immigrants adultes (Levels of competence in French as a second language for the adult immigrant) created by the Université de Montréal, McGill University and the Ministère des Relations avec les citoyens et de l'Immigration (Minister of Relations with the Citizens and Immigration).

- Access to recognised competency tests TFI (International French Test) and TCF (Test on Knowledge of French)

- Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

- Groups of 10 to 15 students.

Overall objectives: 
The student will learn the basic mechanics of the French language in the lexical, phonetic and syntactical fields. At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand and transmit, orally and in writing, minimal information pertaining to his/her immediate needs.

Communication themes:
Identity, seasons, family, descriptions, direction, daily activities, numbers, time, weather, food, rules.

Speech functions:
Introducing oneself, describing a person, asking for and giving directions, describing one's family, describing daily activities, telling the time, talking about the weather, buying an item, requesting permission.

Overall objectives:
The student will continue to learn the basic mechanics of the French language, orally and in writing. He/she will be able to understand and transmit information about simple events occurring in his/her daily life.

Communication themes:
Past habits, completed past actions, hobbies and holidays, public/commercial places and services, sports.

Speech functions:
Narrating a sequence of actions in the past tense, talking about habits in the past tense, talking about one's hobbies and holidays, asking for information on public places, talking about sports, inviting a person, making an appointment, accepting and refusing an appointment or invitation.

Overall objectives:
The student will continue to learn the mechanics of the French language, orally and in writing, in the lexical, syntactical, morphosyntactic fields. He/she will be able to transmit more elaborate information and will be able to interact in everyday predictable situations.

Communication themes:
Facts told in the past tense, tastes and preferences (music, movies, etc.), detailed descriptions, opinions (briefly expressed), regions of Quebec.

Speech functions:
Relating past events, expressing one's tastes and preferences, giving a detailed description of an object or situation, expressing one's point of view, learning about Quebec's regions.

Overall objectives:
The student will deepen his knowledge of the French language. At the end of this course, he/she will be in a position to understand and transmit more elaborate information and will be able to interact in less predictable situations.

Communication themes:
Facts told in the past tense (enriched), comparisons, news items, themes related to society (marriage, work, studies, etc.).

Speech functions:
Talking about past events, making comparisons, reading and reporting news items, reading short texts pertaining to social issues.

Overall objectives:
The student will deepen his/her knowledge of the French language, orally and in writing. At the end of this course, he/she will be able to interact more spontaneously in situations that come up in daily life and to communicate in French on themes of everyday life.

Communication themes:
Projects and wishes, Quebec's culture (values, customs, traditions), the regions of Quebec and Canada.

Speech functions:
Expressing projects and wishes, learning about Quebec's culture and the regions of Quebec and Canada.

Overall objectives:
This course will allow the student to reinforce his/her oral and writing skills and to deepen his/her lexical and syntactical knowledge. At the end of this course, the student will be in a position to understand and partake in simple conversations.

Communication themes:
The news, studies, work, Quebec's arts and literature (through songs, films and narrative texts).

Speech functions:
Taking part in discussion and workshop on news items. Reading texts and short stories, expressing one's point of view.
