The English Language Centre (ELC)

(University of Victoria) Canada

The University of Victoria's English Language Centre (ELC) is located in Victoria, British Columbia, on Canada’s spectacular West Coast.  In both short and long term language programs, the ELC offers a unique opportunity for international students to:

  • study on a modern university campus

  • improve their English for work, travel, or further study

  • experience West Coast Canadian culture

  • meet friends from over 20 countries worldwide

The ELC was established at the University of Victoria in 1970 and our reputation for high quality programs now attracts over 2000 students each year.  Recognized internationally, our programs combine the best in classroom instruction, English as a Second Language (ESL) technology, and exciting social and cultural activities.

Whether you choose a short-term program to enjoy during your regular holidays, or commit to a longer stay in Victoria, the ELC is an experience you will never forget.

About ELC

Continuing Studies Building

The English Language Centre is one of the oldest and largest in Canada. Our location in the welcoming, safe and spectacularly beautiful city of Victoria attracts many students to us. The ELC’s excellent programs, kind teachers, and modern facilities on a park-like campus keep them coming back.  Victoria is always a popular destination for students and tourists alike, and has been voted “Best City of the Americas” because of its mix of friendly people, history, outdoor adventure and the warmest climate in Canada. (Conde Nast Traveler magazine, 2003).

In early 2004, the ELC moved to a new building where our students enjoy 16 classrooms designed specifically for ESL learning, 2 modern computer labs, and easy access to all staff and teachers at the ELC. The spacious back patio offers an area to lounge and relax on sunny days and faces the playing fields. We are centrally located and close to the bus stops, the Student Union Building, gym, and the University Centre cafeteria.

The ELC offers daily structured language classes with professional English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. All of our instructors are university graduates with special training and experience in teaching ESL. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of international students, and each instructor works individually to create a friendly and supportive environment inside the classroom.  Small class sizes guarantee that each student receives lots of personal attention in class.

We use the most modern teaching methods and materials available so that our students get the best English experience possible. The program includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as grammar, vocabulary, and the use of English idioms. In addition, ELC students have access to ESL study resources such as computerized language labs, libraries, and a free pronunciation clinic and tutorial room.  Our kind and helpful administrative staff, cultural assistants, homestay families, volunteers and teachers are all available to assist and support students throughout their program.

Sociocultural Activities

We believe that the social and cultural experiences you have in Victoria are very important to help you meet Canadians and improve your spoken English. Many of your memories of Victoria will be of your time spent outside of the classroom. The Activities Coordinator for your program will make sure that fun events are organized to help you meet Canadian students and practice your English. Most of these activities are free!

You will receive a calendar of events at the beginning of your program outlining all of the exciting things that you can participate in during your stay in Victoria. Depending on your program, you may visit attractions such as Butchart Gardens, the Royal BC Museum, the city of Chemainus, or enjoy whale watching, international nights on campus, dances, skating, and much more! See a Short-Term Program sample calendar or 12-Week Program sample calendar to get an idea of what your Activities Coordinator might plan for you.

Group activities are led by “Cultural Assistants” (CA). “CAs” are Canadian students who, along with host families, teachers, and the ELC staff, are there to help you feel at home in Victoria. The socio-cultural part of the program provides students with immediate opportunities to figure out the practical necessities of life in a different country such as how to read a bus schedule, how to use a Canadian pay phone, and how to ask a stranger for directions.
