The Master of Science in Management: An Alternative to the MBA

A Unique Approach to Graduate Management Education

Offered at the University of Lethbridge Canada, the Master of Science in Management is the only one of its kind Alberta.  The M.Sc. is different from the more common MBA.  In MBA programs, students take a variety of courses across business disciplines to develop a broad perspective on business.  It is classroom-based instruction.

In M.Sc. programs, however, students specialize in one particular area of business.  The areas of specialization for our M.Sc. program include: Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, or Policy and Strategy.  The program not only includes classroom instruction, but culminates in an original research project.  Students work directly with faculty throughout their coursework and research project.

Unlike a Traditional MBA Program the technical and interpersonal competencies you will gain in our one-year, MSc Program can be applied to a career in research or consulting; post-secondary teaching; or they can be the foundation for your next step in graduate education: a PhD Program.

Individual Workspace, Computers and Software

All graduate students have their own workspace and personal computer. Graduate students share a printer and they also have access to network printers as well as technically advanced audiovisual equipment. All students are assigned e-mail and Internet accounts at no additional cost. All on-site computers are equipped with up-to-date software.

One-year, Intensive Program of Study

Students receive a Master's Degree in twelve months (September to August). The program is intensified and accelerated, which means that it is ideal for working individuals, people with families, or people with other commitments for which one year at school is realistic.

Focusing on current management paradigms, research methods and questions, the MSc in Management is a one-year, 36-credit hour; researched-oriented graduate degree.  The program’s unique design provides students with the knowledge and hands-on experience to conduct rigorous and scholarly investigation into an issue facing management in the area of the chosen major.  The program not only includes classroom instruction, but culminates in an original research project.  Students work directly with faculty throughout their coursework and research project.

Currently the MSc Management program operates throughout the calendar year with four modules, beginning with a week-long Orientation/Team Building with students and faculty.  The Fall Course Module includes a focus on research, data management and statistics.  The Spring Course Module is designed for more individualized study, with readings courses in each subject area specialty as well as the development of their research project design.  The fourth and final module is focused on the student’s independent research project, involving literature review, data collection and write-up of the findings in a publishable, replicable format.

Learning with Accomplished Researchers and Teachers in Management

Students work directly with the faculty and their supervisor during the coursework of the program and through to the completion of their Master's Research Project. The Faculty of Management has an international reputation of research excellence: 64% of the faculty have PhDs, 71% of the faculty have direct, industry experience, and 79% have international experience in industry or academia.

A Maximum of 14 Full-time Students Per Year

The program started in 2000 with four students and accepted ten in its second year (2001/2002). In its third year (2002/2003), the program reached maximum capacity with fourteen full-time students. To continue providing a high quality program, the expectation for 2005 is to accept another fourteen full-time students. The small classes contribute to an atmosphere of collegiality and individualized learning within the faculty.

Summer Research Fellowships

A research fellowship will be awarded to students during the Master's Project Module to assist them in successfully completing, submitting and defending their Master's Research Project. Students are encouraged to investigate external sources of funding when applying to the program to ensure that they will have adequate financial support throughout the length of their M.Sc. (Management).
