Founded in 1802, Saint Mary's University is situated within one city block in the picturesque south end of Halifax, the bustling portside capital of Nova Scotia.  Halifax has theatres, museums, spas and shopping.  It is a pub and club city with more than 70 vibrant establishments.  Live music is easy to find on almost any given night.  Walk down streets and taste history as you explore the Halifax Citadel, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Pier 21 National Historic Site.  Dish up a culinary adventure, the city serves up a wonderfully eclectic mix of eateries and don't forget the seafood, it's a speciality.  Halifax, Nova Scotia, is Atlantic Canada's leading educational, business, and cultural centre.

There are approximately 8, 800 full-time and part-time students in attendance at Saint Mary's University.  With a population of more than 1300 international students, Saint Mary's has a distinctly international flavour with students from 94 countries.

Requirements for International Students:

To be considered for Saint Mary's undergraduate programs, students must have completed high school with an average (in 5 subjects) of 65 percent and no mark below 60 percent.  Required subjects include English for all programs and other faculty-specific requirements.

Saint Mary's University offers conditional acceptance to international students who satisfy the academic requirements for admission.

Students who successfully complete the highest level of EAP (Level six) at the Saint Mary's University Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Centre may be admitted to undergraduate programs without a standardized language examination.

Students whose first language is not English and who have not attended an English language secondary school must provide official results from one of the standardized tests below:

        I.  A minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (minimum computerized TOEFL score 213), minimum internet based score 80.

        II.  An aggregate grade of C or higher on the Cambridge First Certificate in English.

        III.  A minimum score of 80 on the Michigan Examination (MELAB).

        IV.  An Average of 4.5 on the CanTest administered by Saint Mary's University.

        V.  A minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

        VI.  A minimum score of 60 on the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment.

      VII.  By successfully completing the highest level of English for Academic Purposes (Level Six) at the TESL Centre.

Students applying to undergraduate programs must submit an application form, CDN $ 40.00 application fee, official transcript of grades, appropriate test results, and English proficiency scores, if applicable.  Applications can be found on the University's web site at www.smu.ca .

The application deadline for Saint Mary's University for Canadian applicants is July 1 for September admission and November 1 for January admission.

The application deadline for international applications is April 1 for September admission and August 1 for January admission.  Late applications are considered on an individual basis.

Note: The residences are extremely popular and the demand always exceeds the beds available.  The residences usually fill up 6 to 8 months in advance of September.   The application fee for residence is CDN $ 25.00. 

Note:   Most students submit applications for admission and residence by January/February.

  Applications received after March 15th will be considered for scholarships as resources permit.

Transfer Students Students who have been enrolled in an academic program at another university should follow the regular procedure for admission to Saint Mary's University through the Admissions Office.  In order to be considered admissible, transfer students are normally required to have achieved a minimum average of C.

You can experience four distinct seasons in Halifax.  Colourful autumns, mild winters, warm springs and temperate summers make the city enjoyable any time of year.

Halifax is very accessible from major centres only a few hours by plane from Toronto, Boston and New York.
