Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) Canada
The Latin Quarter, where UQAM was built in 1969, has been frequented by students for over 120 years. In fact, the first French-language university in Montreal was founded here in 1876, right on the actual location of the Hubert-Aquin pavilion, at the corner of Saint-Denis and Sainte-Catherine. Today UQAM students enjoy a modern campus. All buildings are located on two main sites: Berri-UQAM, near the metro station of the same name, and the Science Complex, north of Place des Arts, which houses almost all of the science departments. UQAM will soon complete the construction of this complex with the addition of the Biology Pavilion. For now, research and teaching laboratories of the Biological Sciences Department are located in the Science Pavilion on Saint-Alexandre Street. The campus is easily accessible

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSITY UQAM offers a very wide range of fields of study, some of which are unique. The interdisciplinary approach to research and arts is also a feature of many programs. Aware that versatility and general culture are invaluable qualities both in the workforce and during graduate studies, UQAM, now more than ever, offers an education that gives students exposure to society and the world. As a result, it has changed many programs, including the specialized bachelor’s degree programs, to increase the emphasis placed on general culture. Furthermore, many programs now offer the option of combining a major with a minor of your choice, in order to better meet your needs.
UQAM is distinguished by the emphasis it places on providing a practical education. More than 85% of the bachelor’s programs offer the possibility of doing internships at schools, businesses, museums, law firms, not to mention fieldwork and laboratories. In addition, many programs use teaching methods that require active participation: teamwork, case studies, writing workshops, and even problem-based learning.
UQAM offers more than 110 graduate study programs. Some of them are given jointly with other university institutions, such as the master’s of museology, project management, software engineering and the doctorate of administration, biology, communications, education, art history and urban studies. These joint resources foster an exceptional synergy. Our excellent reputation attracts foreign students in large numbers. This is especially the case of the doctorate of environmental science, a field in which UQAM is a pioneer, offering a doctorate in this field since 1987 and the first university in Canada to do so.
