Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts- Outreach

As part of its role in fostering the performing arts, the Academy undertakes a variety of community outreach activities to enrich the cultural life of Hong Kong while giving students a broader range of performing experience. Outreach activities are viewed as an important dimension of the Academy's future development. They contribute to building audiences for the increasing number of performers graduating from the Academy as well as broadening the base for Recruit Students.

The Academy also schedules special matinee performances for secondary school students, youth with special needs and other interested groups.

Dance students, especially those in their senior years, are frequently invited to participate in outreach / internship projects involving productions by local and visiting international professional dance companies, including the Hong Kong Ballet, the Hong Kong Dance Company, the City Contemporary Dance Company, Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal Company and the Stuttgart Ballet, as well as works by distinguished choreographers in performances both locally and abroad.

Each year, workshops are arranged for primary and secondary school teachers during which Drama teachers give training in acting techniques, directing skills, play writing, make up design, backstage organisation, lighting design and stage management techniques. The School of Drama also provides intensive acting courses for participants of the Hong Kong Schools' Drama Competition during summer.

The School of Music organises students to perform on different occasions for educational and training purposes. These include concerts at Government House, performing as extra players in professional orchestras, and playing chamber or solo music at various public and private functions.

The School of Technical Arts collaborates with secondary schools to produce plays or musicals to promote an interest in and an understanding of the technical arts. A series of theatre and technical arts training courses has been developed to meet the needs of secondary school children. Each training course contains between 16 and 20 one or two-hour sessions and around four longer technical workshops of approximately three hours each. The response has been excellent and the School of Technical Arts has received a large number of requests to expand this programme to more secondary schools.

Over 2, 000 secondary school students saw a Technical Arts' Theatre in Circus installation at the Academy's Amphitheatre in 2001. Participants were led through a series of interactive environments where special effects were demonstrated from simple mechanical puppets and stage machinery to sophisticated computer-controlled lighting, sound and scenic art effects. Planning is currently under way to repeat this highly successful outreach event in 2001-02.

The Academy's outreach programmes are not solely limited to activities within Hong Kong. Students are frequently invited to perform abroad in international festivals and important cultural events, often sponsored by the Government to promote or represent Hong Kong.
