Studying in Montreal

Studying in Montreal

There are several reasons to study in Canada, particularly in Montreal. In 1996, the United Nations ranked Canada as the best place in the world to live based upon Canada's achievements in' terms of educational attainment, life expectancy, national income and general quality of life.

The appraisal took account of Canada's abundance of fresh water, comfortable population density, low incidence of violent crime and a health care system that is a model for the world. Canada is a leader in language training. For over a century, Canada's two official languages have been taught as second  languages. As a multicultural society receiving new immigrants who speak various languages, Canada has become a world leader in language training, especially in the  area of English and French for Academic and Special Vocational Purposes.

The city of Montreal is located in Quebec, Canada. Montreal ranks among the 20 most important cities in the world. The city of Montreal is an island, though it is not apparent when you are in the city because of the vastness of this metropolis. The Mount Royal crowns the urban landscape as you look out from any downtown location. Montreal enjoys a prime geographical location. A short distance from New York, Boston and Chicago which can all be reached in one hour of air travel. Montreal is right at the centre of action. The city is very accessible, with two airports, bus terminals and a train service. Montreal is located in a prime location. Travelling in the city is very easy, with a large Metro (subway) system, good bus service (monthly pass is $35 US) and a commuter train. It is very convenient to travel from one end of the city to the other.

Bilingual Influence

Montreal is the historical crossroads of French and English culture in America. Today, there is an amazing cultural diversity; every country is represented, and this is felt by the rich influence of cultures from around the world; LaSalle College is no exception, with many foreign students studying full-time or part-time.

Montreal is a very safe city, and offers a wide range of apartments and homes for rent or sale. Prices for a nice downtown apartment range from $250-$45Q per month (US funds) depending on the size and location. Montreal is inexpensive. it is one of.the most inexpensive cities in North America, as well as in the world.Yet the quaIity of life is second to none. Some examples of prices for basic supplies (in US funds)  are: one dozen eggs($1.40); 1 litre of Milk ($1.00); bread ($1.50). Restaurants are plentiful and offer meals in every price range. From fast food to fine dining. Montreal has it all!

Having four seasons means you'll never be bored in Montreal! There are many things to do year round from visiting the Old Port of Montreal, to the many underground malls in Downtown Montreal (a wonderful place to stay warm during the cold winter months). During the winter, an evening at a hockey game, or a visit to the 'Festival des Neiges', (an outdoor winter wonderland carnival), is a wonderful outing.

If you fancy something different, there are movie theatres, outdoor summer events (like the Montreal Jazz Festival, or the Just for Laughs Festival), and bike paths that circle  the whole island. Each year, Montreal also becomes the site of the Formula I Grand Prix. Montreal shines in all areas of activities. arts, education, commerce, finance, sports and lei- sure all play an important role in the life of Montrealers.

You can also see the city from the water on a river boat tour or on a thrilling ride down the Lachine Rapids. Last but not least be sure to see La Ronde, an amusement park, situated on a man-made island built for Expo '67, where roller coasters and fireworks (from the Benson and Hedges International Fireworks competition) rule the summer.
