The Czech Republic has a temperate continental climate, with relatively hot summers and cold, cloudy and snowy winters. Most rain falls during the summer. The temperature difference between summer and winter is relatively high, due to the landlocked geographical position.

Czech is a West Slavic language with about 12 million native speakers; it is the majority language in the Czech Republic and spoken by Czechs worldwide. The language was known as Bohemian in English until the late 19th century.

The Czech Koruna is the currency of Czech Republic. The currency code for Koruny is CZK, and the currency symbol is Kč.


The population of Czech Republic in 2003 was estimated by the United Nations at 10, 236, 000, which placed it as number 76 in population among the 193 nations of the world. In that year approximately 14% of the population was over 65 years of age, with another 16% of the population under 15 years of age.

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic.

The city proper is home to about 1.3 million people.
