The British International School Cairo was established in 1976 to provide educational facilities based on a British curriculum and educational principles, and to satisfy the needs of expatriate British and Anglo-Egyptians, citizens of Commonwealth and other countries with British-based education systems, and the children of the English-speaking Egyptian community. The The British International School, Cairo is an entirely private, fee-financed, non-profit making Society authorised by the Ministry of Social Affairs. It is situated in Zamalek, a residential area close to the centre of the city.About one quarter of the 604 pupils are British and the rest are made up of approximately 53 other nationalities, ranging from three year-olds in the Nursery to 18-year-olds in Upper Sixth.Entry to the Primary School is by selection tests and in the Senior School there is the need to assess the potential to embark on GCSE and International Baccalaureate courses. Classes do not exceed 24 pupils and overall staffing is 1: 11.The British International School, Cairo premises, which are on five floors, have been modernized and the upward extension houses the Primary classes. It is well equipped with new laboratories, music centre, libraries, resource centre and specialist rooms. An extension to provide an IT/Computer Department, a new library and other specialist facilities was built in 1995-96.There are two gymnastic and two astro-turf areas in the school complex, but the sporting facilities of the Gezira Sporting Club are used extensively by the physical education department. Many extra-curricular activities are offered and students are expected to participate in as many of these as possible. The school uses the National Nature Reserve at Ras Mohammed for environmental studies.
