Eritrea
has a variety of climatic conditions. Asmara at 2, 350
meters has a pleasant climate all year
and receives 508 mm of rainfall annually.
The eastern coastal areas receive the unpredictable,
"little rains" (belg) during October to March, while the
other areas get "main rains" (kiremti) from June to
September. |

Tigrinya
is the main language of Eritrea and is also widely
spoken in the Tigray area in Ethiopia. |

The Nakfa, denoted by EFN, is the
official currency of Eritrea. Divided into 100 cents,
the currency was introduced in 1997 in place of the
Ethiopian Birr. During the Italian colonization (from
1895 until World War Two), the currency used in Eritrea
was the Italian lire. |

4, 135, 933 in July 2000. The population increased from
2.1 million in 1975 to 3.6 million in 1998, indicating a
