Bordeaux International School (B. I. S. ) was founded in 1987. It provides Early Learning, Primary, Middle School and Secondary education from the age of 3 to 19 years, within a stimulating multicultural environment.
There are areas for music, drama, arts and craft, a library-media centre, a dining room and a science laboratory. All classrooms have access to Internet and information technology is integrated throughout the school. The curriculum has an international focus and takes full advantage of Bordeaux and French culture.
Early Learning, Primary and Middle School are bilingual. Primary is accredited by the French Ministry of Education.
The English-speaking students follow the English National Curriculum, and the French-speaking students, the French National programme, both adapted to serve the needs of an international community. All children spend an equal amount of time in both languages.
The curriculum offers a multi-cultural dimension in social sciences and creative arts.
The inter-disciplinary programme is based on group discussion and exploration of ideas. “Hands-on” activities consolidate the basic concepts.
There is ESL support for students whose mother tongue is neither French nor English.
Spanish is introduced from the age of 4.
Middle School offers a bilingual programme of study for students aged 10–13, accessible to students of all nationalities. The curriculum is delivered half in English and half in French and offers a fluid transition between Primary and Secondary education.
In the Secondary section, the core subjects are taught in English and students are therefore only accepted with a satisfactory level of English.
Students prepare for IGCSE, AS and A2 Level examinations. The programmes can be adapted to meet the requirements of American schools and colleges. Emphasis is placed on acquiring competence in the French language both through small classes and involvement in various activities offered locally.
Students who need either weekly or full time accommodation are lodged with carefully selected French host families within the town centre.
Throughout the school, the teacher/students ratio is on average 1: 7 to allow maximum interaction.
Learning support is available for students with mild learning needs.
French languages courses are available for individuals and groups, during the year and during the summer, for exam preparation (IGCSE, Al, IB) or for cultural enrichment.
