The school was founded in 2004 with the mission to bring to Lyon an anglophone international education centered on the programmes of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The school is authorized to teach the IB Diploma Programme, and the IB Primary Years (PYP) programme, and is an examination center for the Cambridge IGCSEs. The curriculum has been developed to respond to the needs of children from expatriate and local families in the Lyon region, and, more widely, of all those looking for an education in English language that emphasizes intercultural understanding, a teaching methodology promoting independent learning, and differentiated and rigorous assessment of students' progress and achievement. The international staff has extensive experience in the delivery of international programmes and regularly attends the relevant IBO and other training workshops.
In 9th and 10th grade the school prepares students for the Cambridge IGCSE examinations. All 11th and 12th grade students are enroled in the IB Diploma programme, and successfully completed high-school courses count as credits towards an American High School Diploma. In line with IB pedagogy, students are offered a varied programme of extra curricular activities. The details of the educational programme are available on the school's web site at www.islyon.org. The school has the status of a not-for-profit organization under French law (association loi 1901). It is supported by a group of major multinational companies in the Lyon area. It is housed in the fully-equipped and purpose-built premises of what used to be a French middle school ('college') in the residential suburb of Sainte-Foy-sur-Lyon.
The school year runs from early September until the end of June, with holidays following the French calendar for the Lyon region. The school day extends from 08: 20 to 16: 15 (15: 35 in the primary and middle school who have half days on Wednesdays). Admission is open to all students for whom the school can design a suitable program of studies. School records, evaluation and, where possible, testing or an interview are used to ensure appropriate placement. The school provides support for speakers of English as a second language in all grades from primary through 10th.
