The Ecole Active Bilingue Jeannine Manuel, founded in 1954, is a private co-educational college preparatory day-school with the main section in Paris and another near Lille, subsidized by the State (by 'contrat d'association'). It is recognized by UNESCO as an 'associated school'.
The aim of the school is to develop bilingualism and biculturalism. In the primary classes, besides the French national programme, English is obligatory for all students. It is taught as a foreign language and as a mother tongue. Chinese begins in 3rd grade and is compulsory for three years. It becomes optional as of 6th grade. In secondary classes, French and English are the working languages. English is taught as a foreign language or a mother tongue by level of proficiency. Science, history and geography are taught in English or French. For those students wishing to enter American universities, the College Board exams (SAT, Achievement Tests, PSAT) are administered. Adaptation classes for non-French students run parallel with regular French classes, with emphasis on the teaching of French. All teachers, French and foreign, are qualified, certified teachers. The French Baccalaur?t, the French Baccalaur?t with 'Option Internationale', and the International Baccalaureate are the final exams for the school. Computer science classes are offered.
The school day is from 08: 30 to 17: 00, Monday to Friday, with Wednesday free from pre-K to 5th grade and Wednesday afternoon free in the middle school. Hot meals are served daily. There is also a cafeteria service. Located in the centre of Paris, the school has modern premises with many facilities (gymnasium, science laboratories, library, playground, etc. ) The school has a new centre near Lille with boarding capacity of 100 (out of 600 students, K through 12th grade) students at 418 bis, rue Albert Bailly, 59700 Marcq en Baroeul, tel 33 3 20. 65. 90. 50. (see entry under Lille, France) Admission to either section is on school records and interviews.
