Located in Berlin-Mitte, Berlin Metropolitan School is a growing international school in the heart of the city. The spacious building offers our 650 students an indoor gym, two music rooms and two visual arts rooms. The school, which currently offers a program from Preschool to grade 9, will reach grade 12 by growing one grade level per year until 2016. Grade 12 students will then be able to graduate with the IB diploma. The school’s mission is to provide a child-centered, challenging and internatinal program that embraces the Arts and teaches students to take responsibility as world citizens.
Berlin Metropolitan School is an all-day school that provides supervision starting at 7: 30 a. m.and ending at 6 p. m. Classes take place from 8: 30 a. m. to 3: 00 p. m., and there is an extensive Afternoon Program with a wide range of activities ranging from modern dance and football to photography. As a state recognized school, BMS fulfills the requirements of the Berlin State Curriculum, as well as those of the Primary Years Programme of the IB.
The BMS Kindergarten (ages 3-4) and Preschool (age 5) groups are limited to 18 children. Each group has a German and an English speaking educator throughout the day. The Kindergarten groups have very structured days which include music lessons, a visit to the science lab, movement, weekly field trips and free time to play with their classmates. The children also start to work on projects that encourage their hunger for knowledge and support active learning within the guidelines of the
PYP programme.
Primary School classes have a maximum of 22 students. Beginning in grade 1, classes are taught by a native English speaking classroom teacher, who covers all subjects except German, art, music and sport.
From grade 6 on, the Cambridge International Programme shapes our curriculum. As the school grows, our students will be able to receive the IGCSE diploma and the Berlin MSA in grade 10th and the IB diploma in grade 12th. Secondary students students can choose French or Spanish as a third language as of grade 7. Electives are taught by our teachers in the afternoon, offering choices for students to continue learning after the end of classes.
Throughout the school, the focus is on hands-on, child-centered inquiry-based instruction. In partnership with families, our teachers work to inspire students to take charge of their learning.
