Learning Support Programme
The Franconian International School (FIS) serves the international communities of the greater Nuremberg region, including Erlangen, Herzogenaurach, and fürth.
The School opened in September 1998 with Grades One and Two. Additional grades have been added each year concluding with the first Grade 12 class in August 2008.
The FIS operates a full-day program from its three-year-old Kindergarten to Grade 12 with English as the language of instruction. The school provides a full academic program, starting with the International Primary Curriculum in Kindergarten and ES. It includes a range of subjects with specialized teachers for German, PE, Art, Music and Information Technology. In Middle School (Grades 5-8) all subjects are taught by specialist teachers. Spanish is taught from Grade 6. The FIS offers the International General Certificates of Secondary Education (IGCSE) program in Grades 9 and 10, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in Grades 11 and 12.
The FIS relocated to a new purpose-built campus with state-of-the-art facilities in August 2008 and expanded the facility to include an arts center which was completed in summer of 2012. The school facility includes modern classrooms, fully equipped science labs, specialist art and music rooms, PC labs, library, cafeteria and a double gymnasium.
The fully qualified and experienced teaching staff comes from various nations including the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Germany. The FIS also has an extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) programme and a Student Support Services programme for a small number of students with limited special educational needs.
The FIS has a competitive sport program and an after school activity program including sports, music, arts, games, hobbies and homework clubs. Additionally, there is an active Parent Teacher Organization.
The FIS is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the members of the FIS Association and major sponsoring companies. Admission is available on a year-round basis subject to space availability.
