It is operated by an elected Board of Governors composed of parent and non-parent members and is accredited by CIS and NEASC. The school provides a formal educational programme in English for children between the ages of three and approximately 18 years of age. A balanced curriculum prepares students in the major academic areas while ample allowance is made for extra-curricular activities which are considered a vital part of school life. The school offers a pre-IB programme and the IB Diploma to qualify students for university study. A special programme is provided for students whose native language is not English. In the elementary school emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic skills; specialist teachers give instruction in music, physical education and German. The teaching staff comes from several different countries and has an average of 10 years experience at ISH. Many are experienced overseas teachers and also have advanced degrees. The school year commences in mid-August and concludes in mid-June. In December 2009 the school has relocated to a purpose-built campus which is located directly opposite the Botanical Gardens in Klein Flottbek in the Hamburg green belt. It features a stand-alone Early Childhood Centre, an integrated Creative and Performing Arts Centre, a double-sized gymnasium, outstanding library and information technology facilities and fully-equipped laboratories for chemistry, physics and biology. The new school sits on a 40, 000 square metre site and also features purpose-built Junior and Secondary School classrooms and landscaped outdoor areas. Admission is based on an evaluation of the student's record from the previous school plus a personal interview, giving due consideration to the ability of the student to develop academically and socially at ISH. |
