Kennedy German-American Community School (JFKS) is a bilingual, bicultural, tuition-free public school in Berlin. It offers an integrated elementary and high school program that combines the strengths of both the German and American educational traditions. Acknowledging and appreciating cultural diversity, JFKS serves German- and English-speaking students of both nations for the purpose of developing international understanding. The languages of instruction, German and English, are equally respected. Within this framework the educational program incorporates the essentials of the German and American school curricula. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and in 2008 the Berlin School Inspection (Schulinspektion) was completed. The elementary school program provides a general education, which prepares children for continued schooling in the JFKS high school or re-entry into German, state-side or overseas schools. The high school program leads to the German Abitur and the US high school diploma with Advanced Placement courses. JFKS offers a full range of academic courses, including many electives, all of which are instructed by native speakers at mother tongue levels. Teachers (55% German, 45% American) are all certified. About 80% hold MA degrees or the equivalent. The student body is 55% German, 37% American and 7% international. Located in a south-western residential district of Berlin in Zehlendorf, the John F. Kennedy School has 135 fully-networked classrooms, nine science labs, two library-media centers, four computer labs, modern sport facilities with six gymnasiums, an athletic field and a track, a fine arts and drama annex with two performing stages, and a cafeteria. These attractive facilities of unique architectural design are housed in seven buildings on a campus of 40, 000 square meters. The school calendar conforms to the German system. All German holidays and major American holidays are observed. The school day is 08: 00 to 15: 00 or 16: 00 for grades 5-12; 08: 00 to 14: 15 for grades 3-6; 08: 00 to 13: 30 for grades 1 and 2, and 09: 00 to 13: 30 for the Entrance Class. Students who are weak academically, particularly in their mother tongue (English or German), are advised to attend a monolingual school. |
