SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College, GhanaSOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College was founded by the charitable, non-profit SOS Kinderdorf International Organisation in 1990 to prepare gifted SOS children from English-speaking Africa for advanced academic education in the universities of Africa and elsewhere. The academic and extracurricular programmes are designed to develop a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to Africa's development. The IGCSE syllabuses and exams are offered in all the basic science and arts subjects but the following are compulsory: English language, literature, French, maths, biology and computer studies. The IB programme is offered at sixth form level, and, as part of an active CAS programme, the college places great emphasis on the creative arts and community service. All teaching staff at SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College are graduates and specialist subject trained. They come from four different continents and have between five and twenty years prior teaching experience. The students at SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College come from SOS Children's Villages in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Swaziland, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, the Gambia, Namibia and Malawi and the others from non-SOS Ghana, China and Taiwan. The students are encouraged to exchange cross-cultural experiences and ideas. The SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College year follows the Northern hemisphere school calendar from August to June. The school day begins at 07: 30 and ends at 13: 50 for lunch, followed by labs, special classes, or extra curricular activities. Students participate in one compulsory sport and one compulsory creative or community activity per week; clubs include drama, French, science and computer. Pottery, weaving, art, batik and African musical instruments are some of the creative activities available. Present facilities comprise eleven classrooms, four science laboratories, two computer labs, library, language laboratory, basketball court and a soccer field, as well as music and art rooms, and a new Administration block. Boarding facilities for 250 students provide single and double bedroom occupancy, and a hall for dining and Hostel functions. Additional facilities now include two modern, well-equipped exercise gyms, adjacent to a near-Olympic sized pool, and a multi-purpose hall seating 500. Prior to admission, all students from Ghana and abroad are tested in maths, English and general science, either at the college itself or by recruitment teams who also interview candidates in their various countries.
