Lok Yuen International School in the New Territories
A multicultural International School and kindergarten set in the Hong Lok Yuen
estate for expatriate and local residents in the
New
Territories. It provides for children from Nursery to Year 8. The school is
accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS).
Curriculum
Hong Lok Yuen offers a UK-based curriculum taught in English. Staff are trained
and use ICT and multi media in every classroom from Nursery to Year 7. Daily
Chinese studies lessons, are taught in Putonghua with programmes tailored
according to ability. The school provides an extensive educational support unit
with two specialist teachers who work together with classroom teachers to
support children with special learning needs and those requiring English as an
Additional Language (EAL).
Nursery
The pre-school provides opportunities for 3-year-olds to learn about the
environment around them, and to bridge the gap between home and starting school.
The pre-school is housed in a purpose-built section of Hong Lok Yuen school.
Parents are welcome to play an active part. Helping a child gain self-esteem is
an important part of the nursery section.
Reception to Year 7
The Curriculum is well structured and provides for a solid foundation of skills
as well as development of an enquiry approach.
English and Mathematics are taught using the UK Literacy and Numeracy Strategy.
Science, Chinese studies, Music, Design and technology and ICT are all taught in
specifically resourced classrooms. Art, Geography and History are incorporated
into topic based learning and subject coordinators arrange specialist curriculum
weeks once a year. ICT is widely used in all classes with the use of Interactive
Whiteboards. The curriculum at Year 7 is the UK-based Key Stage 3, (with French)
and Putonghua. The curriculum includes two PE lessons a week and children are
encouraged to participate in schools teams in Key Stage 2 and Year 7/8.

Activities
The school provides a variety of out-of-school and lunchtime activities. Some
are offered by teachers and parents, others by outside professionals. They may
require additional fees. They include drama, instrumental lessons,judo, chess,
French, Dutch Language, Netball, Brazilian soccer, choir, ballet, football and
Chinese painting.
Facilities
The school has a large grass playing field and grounds, an outdoor classroom and
an environmental area.
Uniform
A uniform is required and each item should be clearly labelled with the child's
name.
