Learning Support Programme
The American School of Milan was established in 1962 as a non-profit independent, college preparatory day-school. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of NAIS and MAIS. Although the medium of instruction is English, non-English speakers are accepted at the lower levels. The school is owned by the parents of the children enrolled, who constitute the Association which annually elects a twelve-member Board of Trustees.

The Elementary school comprises an Early Childhood program for 3 and 4 year olds followed by a six year elementary program from ages 5-10 years. As an IB World School, ASM offers child-centered learning, where students are proactive in the learning experience, researching, analyzing and presenting information, from the earliest grades.

In the Upper School all students have their own laptop computers from grade 6 and above, making use of a wireless network to enhance their learning and research. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program was introduced in 2004 for grade 6-10 and the school was fully authorized in January 2006. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, which is accepted by universities all over the world, is taught in grades 11-12 and students also graduate with an American High School Diploma. Besides the core classes, ASM offers many stimulating electives including French, Spanish, Italian, digital art, movie making, astronomy, robotics and much more besides.

The student body is primarily composed of international students, with approximately 50 nationalities present in the school; the local Italian population represents about 40% of the student body. The American School of Milan has established a flexible and diverse activity program in an effort to deal with the variety of student interests and backgrounds. Field trips of both historical and cultural interest are arranged in the Milan area and week-long field trips to points of interest in Italy and abroad are organized for all children from the age of eight. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities which include inter-scholastic sports, Model United Nations, music, drama, recreational activities, student government, National Honor Society, and various other opportunities. The school is also the American College test centre for the Milan area. ASM is located on a 16-hectare green campus on the outskirts of Milan. ASM constructed six new state-of-the-art science laboratories, a second new 750 sq. m. gymnasium, and further art, cafeteria, music and large instruction areas in 2009.
