The school year comprises two semesters extending from the beginning of September through mid-January and from mid-January through mid-June. The school is governed by a 12-member Board of Trustees that is elected by the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The school is recognized as a non-profit institution under Italian law and is incorporated in the State of Delaware as tax-exempt under Section 501 (c) (3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. The curriculum is that of US general academic, college-preparatory public or private schools. The school offers both the Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate programs. The school’s testing program includes the College Board’s PSAT, SAT/ACH, the Advanced Placement tests, as well as the full complement of IB examinations. Instruction is English. French, Spanish, Mandarin, Chinese and Italian are taught as foreign languages. There is no religious instruction. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is the first school to be granted an International Credential from the Middle States Association. Italian students prepare for the quinta, prima, seconda and terza media exams. All teachers hold university degrees and over a third hold advanced degrees. They average 20 years of teaching experience, 18 years at AOSR. Approximately 630 students are enrolled annually. The student body is 33% American; 55 other nationalities are represented. About 95% of graduates attend college or university in the USA, Canada, England and other parts of the world. The six-acre suburban campus includes a central quadrangle, shaded by umbrella pines and surrounded by lawns, shrubs and flowering plants. Five separate buildings and the grounds include 55 classrooms, four science laboratories, four computer laboratories, a gymnasium, a cafeteria/auditorium, an infirmary, two libraries, an outdoor amphitheatre, tennis and basketball courts and soccer and softball fields. |
