Because
of its altitude, Lesotho remains cooler throughout the
year than other regions at the same latitude. Most of
the rain falls as summer thunderstorms. Maseru and
surrounding lowlands often reach 30 °C (86 °F) in
summer. |

The
official Lesotho language is English. The other
languages of Lesotho are Sesotho, Xhosa and Zulu.
Sesotho is also an official language of the country
besides English. This language belongs to the Sotho
language group. Numerous affixes are used in Sesotho
language. This language has its origin in Niger-Congo
language family. |

The Loti, denoted by LSL, is the
official currency of the Kingdom of Lesotho in Africa.
The Loti (plural "maloti") is subdivided into 100
lisente (singular "sente"). The LSL is pegged to the
South African Rand on a 1:1 basis and both currencies
are considered legal tender within Lesotho. |

The population of Lesotho in 2003 was
estimated by the United Nations at 1,802,000, which
placed it as number 143 in population among the 193
nations of the world. In that year approximately 5% of
the population was over 65 years of age, with another
40% of the population under 15 years of age. |
| Capital City: |
Maseru is the capital of Lesotho. It is
also the capital of the Maseru District. Located on the
Caledon River, bordering South Africa, Maseru is
Lesotho's only sizable city, with a population of
approximately 227,880 (2006). |
