Libya Education
Both the
Mediterranean Sea and the desert affect Libya's climate.
In the winter, the weather is cool with some rain on the
coast and in the drier the desert temperature can drop
to sub-freezing at night. Arabic is
the official language, although Berber is sometimes
spoken and English and Italian are used in trade. Arabic
must be used for all official purposes. The Libyan dinar is the official
currency used in Libya. Denoted by LYD, one Libyan dinar
can be divided into 1000 Libyan dirhams. During the time
Libya was still a part of the Ottoman Empire, the
country used the Ottoman Empire currency, piastres. Libya's population of roughly 5,115,450
(est. July 2000) has seen an annual growth rate of 3.5
percent since 1975, when it was 2,400,000. With a
predicated annual growth rate of 2.1 percent, the
population will reach 7,600,000 in 2015. Tripoli is the largest city and capital
of Libya. It is also known as Western Tripoli, to
distinguish it from Tripoli, Lebanon. Image Gallery:
