Learning Support Programme
Verdala International School (VIS), Malta, was founded in 1976 to serve the children of expatriate families living in Malta as well as Maltese students wishing to experience an American/Anglo education. In 1987, the school was relocated to its present site in an historic 150-year old British-built fort overlooking the Mediterranean. The current six-acre site campus has facilities which include two libraries, a small gymnasium, three computer laboratories, science rooms, a music room, a football pitch and 34 classrooms as well as several special-use rooms. VIS also operates a residency programme which can accommodate students aged 14 (Grade 9) and above.
Although open to students of varying abilities, VIS is predominantly college preparatory in nature, particularly at the secondary level (grades 6-12). The Elementary School program (grades K-5) is designed to teach students the basic skills and knowledge which they need to be successful in the secondary program, and to create inquisitive learners who can apply what they have learned. The Elementary School has, in order to meet this objective, adopted the International Primary Curriculum. The Middle School program (grades 6-8) recognizes the unique qualities and learning styles of this age group, and uses a wide variety of techniques to address the academic and social needs of these students. Along with a regular American high school program, VIS also offers the British IGCSE in grades 9 and 10, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma program in grades 11 and 12. Virtually all graduating students matriculate to post-secondary institutions throughout North America, Europe and the Mediterranean region.
VIS is a relatively small school of about 300 students with class size limited to 15-17 pupils, ensuring that children receive individual attention in a family atmosphere. Students with limited English proficiency are welcome up to grade 10 and are given extensive help in learning the English language.
