The
climate in Mauritania has no general classification to
it as a whole. However, it has been observed that when
divided into four climate zones, a general climate
profile could be observed on the four different zones.
The four zones are: The Saharan Zone, the Sahelian Zone,
the Senegal River Valley and the Coastal Zone. |

Hassaniya
dialect of Arabic (official and national); Other
languages spoken include: Pulaar, Soninke, Imraguen
language, Wolof and French (widely used in media and
among educated classes, see African French). |

The ouguiya (sign: UM; currency code:
MRO), is the currency of Mauritania. It is the only
circulating currency other than the Malagasy ariary
whose division units are not based on a power of ten,
each ouguiya comprising five khoums (singular and plural
in English, Arabic: خمس, meaning "one fifth"). |

| Population: |
The population of Mauritania in 2003 was
estimated by the United Nations at 2,893,000, which
placed it as number 133 in population among the 193
nations of the world. In that year approximately 3% of
the population was over 65 years of age, with another
44% of the population under 15 years of age. |
| Capital City: |
Nouakchott is the capital and by far the
largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest
cities in the Sahara. The city is the administrative and
economic centre of Mauritania. |
