The United World College Maastricht was established in September 2009 as part of the United World College movement (www.uwc.org). The college is the 13th United World College.
United World College Maastricht was initially formed by joining together the Primary International Department Joppenhof and the Secondary International School Maastricht. These two schools were sections of existing Dutch state schools.
In September 2010 the College will accept its first 50 boarding students. These students are selected from around the world through a UWC established network of committees.
United World College Maastricht offers an international English-language academic curriculum leading to IGCSE and IB. All staff are qualified teachers, most with international experience and most of which are native speakers of English. Dutch studies and Dutch language courses promote integration into the local community. The school has a School Counsellor, Learning Support Teacher and runs the LAP programme for those students who require support. Extra English language support is available from Kindergarten to Year 9 for those students who arrive with little or no English through English support lessons. These students follow an adapted timetable, integrating into the normal timetable when appropriate.
The 520 students represent approximately 42 nationalities. On leaving, most go on to further education, either at home or in the Netherlands. The school believes that service learning and additional activities are an essential part of the learning process. Some of the activities in which pupils can participate are: drama, music, public speaking and writing competitions, Model United Nations and mountain camp in the Alps as well as a broad range of service opportunities.
The school is situated in a modern building, which it shares with a Dutch secondary school. The facilities available to students include: science labs, fully equipped music and art rooms, a computer lab, an IT equipped study centre, two gyms, one with a climbing wall, and a canteen. Plans are in place for a new campus due to open in September 2013.
Children are accepted provided they are internationally mobile and are able to follow the curriculum. Placement tests form part of the admissions procedure.
