Housed in a moated castle in the manner of a Louis XIV chateau dating from 1715, the school has small classes, a family atmosphere, and a devotion to independent thinking. A primary school opened in September 1997. Boarding is offered from the age of seven. A brand-new school building will be brought into use as of September 2011. The school offers a highly diverse IGCSE/IB programme, including language classes by request, in the student's native language, to ensure their native proficiency. A flexible boarding programme is also offered, whereby students can live on campus during the week and go home every weekend, or board full-time. Day students who commute to school are welcome to participate in extra-curricular and weekend activities as desired. The most vital part of life at Eerde is the intensive social interaction between dozens of young people from all over the world. The school has on-campus boarding facilities. Located next to the main building of the castle are two wings, each managed by full-time boarding staff, whose job it is to maintain a safe, pleasant 'home away from home'. Teaching and boarding staff work together to coach children towards a realistic approach to life and learning. Within the grounds of the 2, 000-acre, forested estate there are tennis courts, a well-equipped gymnasium with a small fitness room, including facilities for volleyball and basketball, sports field for hockey and soccer, a brand-new art conservatory. Students regularly participate in cultural excursions to other European cities. The admission process has been designed to allow students to enter throughout the school year. Acceptance is based on the student's academic track record and interviews with management. Upon acceptance, each student is thoroughly assessed in order to assign an individual programme of study. The International School Eerde is probably one of the first secondary schools in The Netherlands, and in the world, where all secondary students have a tablet pc and a wireless network. In this way all students will have, at their fingertips, the latest technology throughout the whole campus. |
