Learning Support Programme
The American School of The Hague is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers a university-preparatory, U. S. style educational program from Preschool through Grade 12. Founded in 1953, the School serves the educational needs of the American and international corporate and diplomatic communities in the Netherlands. ASH’s 1100 students, ages 3 to 18, represent over 65 nationalities; half are from North America. A 9-13 member Board of Trustees governs the school and is a mixture of parents of ASH students and external members from the community. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association and the Council of International Schools.
While ASH reflects the American educational philosophy, the diverse backgrounds of the students foster teaching and learning in the context of international understanding and global citizenship. ASH is a school with a rigorous academic program. Complete Elementary, Middle and High School programs are offered. Elementary School classrooms are self-contained, with music, art, Dutch, IT, library and PE taught by specialists in purpose-built areas. Middle School students study with a grade level teaching team and spend a week of study off-campus each school year. The High School curriculum emphasizes preparation for university studies in North America, Europe and around the world. All students may earn a US high school diploma in addition to the IB diploma. IB offerings at ASH are available across the curriculum at both standard and higher levels. Students are given the opportunity to choose the IB Diploma Programme, or combine IB courses with AP or regular curriculum subjects to earn IB certificates in subject specialties. A variety of IB language courses, including mother tongue tutorials, are available. Students at ASH who choose the IB Diploma Programme enjoy a 95% or higher success rate, and ASH consistently posts scores higher than the world average. In addition ASH students move with confidence to new schools throughout the world, and more than 98% of each graduating class enters university.
A full athletic program and extracurricular activities are an important part of student life. The Hague International Model United Nations is sponsored by the school each January for more than 3000 international participants, and is a major event for many ASH High School students. The arts program offers individual and group instruction and performance opportunities in vocal and instrumental music, and the ASH Jazz Band is well known throughout Europe. Athletic teams in ten sports travel throughout Europe competing with other international schools. The school building, a wireless-networked, single-unit campus, features multiple science and computer labs, 1000 student computers, classroom laptop carts, 1: 1 Laptop program for students grades 6 to 9, art, movement and music studios for each school, three gymnasia and a double sport hall, a 410-seat theatre, 50, 000 print and media volumes in three libraries, one 300-seat and one 200-seat cafeteria. The 11 acre campus grounds include outdoor sports areas for all age groups, including soccer and baseball fields.
