Onehunga High School is a
successful co-educational, multi-purpose and multi-cultural High
School. It has a history of innovation, the latest of which is the
establishment of New Zealand's first business high school.
Onehunga High School is an
urban co-educational school of 1200 students. It is a leading
progressive Secondary School and aims for students to succeed in a
caring and secure environment.
The school is situated in
Central Auckland, on the shores of the Manukau Harbour. It has
beautiful, parklike grounds with views of the harbour. Auckland, The
City of Sails, is New Zealand's largest city. It is surrounded by two
harbours and has many picturesque beaches and parks, and offers a wide
range of recreational facilities.
New
Zealand is situated in the South Pacific. It has a multi-cultural
population of just under 4 million. It is a clean, green country with
wonderful scenic lakes, rivers, mountains and beaches. The New Zealand
people are well known for being very open, friendly and welcoming. This
is most certainly true for the students at our school.
Academic Programme
Onehunga
High School is an achievement orientated school, which sets and
maintains high academic standards. The staff is well qualified and
professional. While academic studies are emphasised, a wide range of
sports and arts including music, drama and cultural activities are
offered. The use of leading edge technology, including computers, is a
particular strength of the school. Our location means that we are close
to Auckland University and the major polytechnics.
The
school prepares students for all New Zealand public examinations and for
tertiary education. You can select subjects taught at Year 9 (Form 3)
to Year 13 (Form 7) level.
English for Speakers of
Other Languages
When you first arrive at
Onehunga High School you are referred to the ESOL Department for English
assessment.
The ESOL
department is staffed by qualified English Language teachers. The
department has a range of resources to help you with English language
and with other subjects in the curriculum. They also provide support
for classroom teachers who have ESOL students in their classes.
At junior level there are
ESOL option classes available. At years 11, 12 & 13 there are special
timetabled programs to help ESOL students. Entry to many subjects at
senior level depends on your English language experience and ability.
You will continue to get help from the ESOL department in your subject
classes.
Homestay
Your
welfare and safety are important to us. Your parents are sending you
far from home for your education, and are anxious about you while you

care are important. As the school is responsible for your welfare during your time at
Onehunga High School you must live in school approved homestay
accommodation. You will not be allowed to live in independent
accommodation.
Homestay accommodation is
arranged with New Zealand families living close to the school.
For your homestay payments
you will receive a fully furnished room, all your meals and laundry
done. You also have access to help at all times and your care in
homestay is closely supervised by the homestay co-ordinators. We hope
you will join in the family activities of the household.
