Adventure Education Limited is New Zealand’s leading educator in
adventure-based learning. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA),
the government agency responsible for setting and monitoring education
qualifications in New Zealand, recognises Adventure Education Limited as
an accredited provider of dive and outdoor pursuits training.
As well as Adventure Education and NZQA qualifications you may receive
certification from giant USA diver-training agency Scuba Schools
International (SSI). Your qualifications are recognised by the New Zealand
Rafting Association, Sea Kayak Operators Association of New Zealand
Incorporated, Project Adventure, New Zealand Mountain Safety and New
Zealand’s Sports, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation.

Adventure Education has a number of training
facilities delivering adventure-based learning to international students
throughout New Zealand.
The Adventure Education Story
Adventure Education was started six years ago by chief executive, Mark
Scapens.
Mark’s vision was to create an organisation specialising in outdoor
adventure training at tertiary level. He saw a gap in the guide and
instructor level training being offered by traditional tertiary providers.
“Our research showed their courses seldom delivered the full range of
skills that the outdoor adventure industry needed,” says Mark.
With a background in the dive industry Mark started Adventure Education
with a scuba diving focus. Within three years Adventure Education became
the market leader in dive training with a nationwide network of dive
training facilities throughout New Zealand. Then followed the introduction
of a unique outdoor leadership course to train highly competent assistant
guides in a range of outdoor activities including white water rafting, sea
kayaking, high and low ropes and scuba diving.
Courses aligned with industry needs
Mark has modelled the content and quality of Adventure Education courses
after talking to industry and listening to what employers want in new
recruits. “They stressed the importance of good communication skills and
practical experience so we specifically build these elements and other
unique qualities into our courses,” he says.
As well as theoretical knowledge Adventure Education graduates enter the
workforce with “employment ready” skills. It is the company’s
philosophy to ensure students graduate with confidence in their own
leadership ability and professionalism. “This way we enable them to be
successful in entering industry related employment or continuing their
studies in related fields,” says Mark.
Unique instruction and qualifications
A unique point of difference from other tertiary providers is the high
level of one-to-one learning available to Adventure Education students.
Small classes taught by dedicated experienced instructors help Adventure
Education graduates reach their fullest potential.
Adventure Education is working with other tertiary institutions to develop
cross-crediting arrangements into higher education including diploma and
degree courses in outdoor recreation, tourism management and marine
science.
As well as offering New Zealand Qualifications Association (NZQA) approved
courses, Adventure Education offers students unique industry
qualifications recognised worldwide by the outdoor adventure industry.
