Marlborough Girls' College seeks to create an environment where every girl develops:
Marlborough Girls' College has agreed to observe and be bound by the 'Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students' published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institute or from the Ministry of Education Website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz International students attending Marlborough Girls' College have their own Director of International Students offering support, advice and guidance. International students are "buddied" with a local girl upon arrival at Marlborough Girl's College. The Principal or Deputy Principal also keeps close contact with parents. International Students are also required to have a legal guardian, appointed by her parents, (often the College) to look after her interests. Getting Started When a student to whom English is a second language first arrives, she is referred for assessment and an individual study programme is prepared for her. Some students with limited English may spend most of their time at first studying English with fully trained and qualified English for Speakers of Other Languages Teachers. All students are placed in a form class and are mainstreamed into Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Music or Art as soon as possible. Careful selection of subjects is very important and guidance and advice is given to all students. Some subjects are heavily language orientated and students often find them more difficult in the first year at College.
International Students' Department Staff provide support to regular classroom teachers and assist in the provision of suitable resources for students. Private tutoring in individual subjects and in English can also be arranged at parent's request, at an additional cost. Reports are sent each term to parents of International students. The College welcomes contact with families and parents and is always happy to discuss any questions or concerns that may arise. Admission Requirements In addition, students must be of good character and in good health, and willing to meet the required standards of conduct both at the College and in a boarding or homestay situation.
