Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Hamilton has a proud tradition of innovation and excellence extending back to 1884, when it was opened as a Secondary School by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions.  It is also proud of the place it holds today as a very successful educator of young women.

Our philosophy and aims are expressed in our motto, “Age Quod Agis” – whatever you do, do to the best of your ability.

It is a College where excellence is pursued and celebrated within a caring and Christian atmosphere.  High expectations, academic, sporting and cultural are part of the daily fabric of school life. The richness and variety of the opportunities offered, contribute to the formation of well-rounded and self-confident young women who are ready to meet the challenges of the 21st Century as women of Virtue and Knowledge.

At Sacred Heart we take a personal interest in all our international students ensuring that they settle into school and life away from home.

Academic Programme

academic.jpg(15873 bytes)Secondary school education at the beginning of the millenium is a five-year program. Students may enter at any level. Subject choices should be seen both as ensuring entry to as wide a range of senior options as possible, and providing an interesting program which meets the student’s needs at an appropriate level.

Detailed information regarding courses in the Senior School is available in a Senior Course booklet. Option evenings are held each year to assist students with their decision making. The school’s results significantly exceed the national average and those of similar schools.

Accommodation

The school can assist with finding homestay accommodation or recommend an agency.  International students can board at  Euphrasie House.

Eupharasie House offers:
  • A secure caring environment
  • Excellent facilities
  • Supervised study times

The College and the hostel function as separate units. Euphrasie House is administered by the Hostel Management Board. Day to day management is the responsibility of the manager while the supervision and welfare of the girls is the responsibility of the matron in charge and a team of assisting matrons.

Euphrasie House provides a warm, welcoming environment where care and respect for each other as a valued member of the Catholic community is promoted. As in the college, our special character is protected and nurtured. Rules and procedures are developed and administered within the framework of gospel values.

Euphrasie House offers comfortable, single accommodation and extensive living and recreational facilities. The building is set amongst trees, garden and lawns. Excellent study facilities are available and study times are closely supervised. Hostel students are traditionally well represented in all aspects of college life, academic, sports and cultural.

Boarding is available for students from year 9 to year 12. Accommodation is also available for year 13 students in 6 person flats within Euphrasie House. The annex contains two self contained units, individual bedrooms and shared bathroom facilities. Year 13 students are encouraged to take responsibility and develop skills for living independently while still within a secure and supportive environment.

In Euphrasie House your daughter will become confident, self assured and equipped for her adult life.

Special Character

Sacred Heart Girls’ College specifically offers an education which is integrated in the Catholic faith by prayer, worship and religious instruction.

It is a Catholic school which exercises its right to live and teach the values of Jesus Christ. It is also essentially a caring school, where each person is cared for and valued as a member of its Christian community.

The staff of the college work in close liaison with the parents in striving towards its goals. The beliefs, practices and values that have already been laid down in the home are built upon in the school.

Faith is an integral part of the school, with every opportunity being taken to strengthen the personal beliefs of the students, leading eventually to a personal commitment in faith on their part. For this reason, and to make sure that the special character is upheld, an undertaking is required by parents upon enrolment of each student that their daughter participates in regular instruction and worship.

The College has a chaplain who joins the College to celebrate liturgies of eucharist and reconciliation.

Sport and Culture

culture.jpg(15072 bytes)Our college has first class facilities for physical education and allied sports with its gymnasium, tennis and netball courts and use of Steele Park.

Annual college sports days are held for swimming and athletics, and all students are encouraged to participate in these at an appropriate level. Some students from the college go on to Waikato and national level competitions in these areas.

All practices of the major sports are held outside class times, with games being played after school and in the weekends.

Sacred Heart is justly proud of its record of achievements in sporting competitions. Students have been selected as Waikato representatives in most sports, and many have gone on to win national and international honours.

"The Gym"Our aim is to encourage all students to enter for at least one activity. Netball is particularly strong in the school, with 30 teams fielded every Saturday morning, giving opportunities at all levels, from top grade to social. Senior students are trained as umpires and scorers, as well as junior team coaches.

Teams are coached and supervised in: athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, hockey, netball, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, tennis, touch rugby, volleyball, water polo.
