Skagerak International School

Skagerak International School was founded in 1991 and is a private, co-educational, pre-tertiary institution accountable to an independent Board of Governors. It seeks to provide an international style and standard of education designed to accommodate the needs of both Norwegian and expatriate students. All students are prepared for the International Baccalaureate. The administration endeavours to meet the special examination requirements of individual students upon request. The Primary and Middle School was opened in 2000 and offers the IB PYP and MYP programmes. The staff comprises highly experienced and motivated teachers, most of whom have a background in international education. All have graduate status. About 75% of the students are Norwegian although some students have attended international schools in other parts of the world. About 25% of the students are foreigners. Considerable emphasis is placed on career guidance. Most graduating students proceed to tertiary education or the professions. The school year runs from mid-August to the end of June with the mid-year break at Christmas. Skagerak International School offers a broad range of extra-curricular activities and all students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programmes or educational travel to other parts of Europe and Africa. Use is made of the town's sporting facilities and an annual ski trip is organized. The school is a member of UNESCO's Soul Project. Skagerak International School is located in the old Framnes shipyard administration buildings at the edge of the fjord. These have been fully restored, modernised and contain specialist science laboratories, computing, music rooms, a fully equipped photographic studio and a library. Admission is by formal application to the Skagerak International School Principal and should be accompanied by transcripts of records from previous schools. All applicants are interviewed, with their parents, before admission is granted.
