The American-British Academy, founded in 1987 is a co-educational IB World school situated against the Hajar Mountains and in the capital city of Muscat. It is a non-profit association governed by the Board of Directors and approved by the Oman Ministry of Education and youth affairs and enjoys diplomatic cover by the British Embassy. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association and Council of Intenrational Schools. ABA is an authorized IBPYP, IBMYP and IB Diploma School. All graduating students from American-British Academy receive a High School Diploma. ABA also prepares students for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education at grades nine and ten. Arabic as a second language is offered from Grade 1 onwards. French from Grade 6-12 and Spanish is introduced at Grade 8. Strong athletic and fine arts programs are offered and students are encouraged to participate in the many extra-curricular activities.
All teachers at American-British Academy hold university degrees and/or certification, and have an average six years experience. There are specialists in counselling, learning assistance, ESL, drama, art, vocal and instrumental music, information technology and PE. The student-teacher ratio is 9: 1 and the maximum class size is 22. The Senior Management team consists of an Elementary Principal at the elementary division and Secondary Principal at the middle/high school division. Coordinators are in place for the IBPYP, IBMYP and the IB diploma program. Lessons are held 07: 30-14: 15, five days a week on 178 student days, August-June. Weekend days are Thursday and Friday.
The American-British Academy is housed in purpose-built facilities that include elementary and secondary blocks, a library, three newly-built computer labs, a 25-meter swimming pool, drama, music, and art rooms. The ABA has extended the facilities to include a new childhood education centre, a new administration complex (including cafeteria, nursing facilities and offices) and a performing art centre.
Plans for future developments at American-British Academy include a modem Learning Resources Centre and an IB Centre for Excellence.
