The Sultan's School is a co-educational selective school, mainly for Omani students, established in 1977. There are four sections: Kindergarten (1 & 2); Elementary (Grades 1-6); Preparatory (Grades 7-9); Secondary (Grades 10-12). Places are allocated on the basis of interviews and tests. Priority is given to Omani nationals.
The programme at Sultan's School is bilingual. Arabic, Islamic and social studies are taught in Arabic, following the Omani national curriculum. English is the teaching language for English language and literature, mathematics and science (biology, chemistry and physics in Grades 9-12). Programmes lead to GCSE in Grade 11 and the Omani Secondary Certificate in Grade 12. SAT and TOEFL are taken by students proceeding to university in the USA.
Almost all teaching staff are university graduates. Nationalities include Algerian (1), British (39), Jordanian (12), Lebanese (2), Egyptian (2), US (2), Irish (1), Syrian (3), Omani (3), Canadian (1), Australian (2) and Tunisia (2).
Ninety percent of students are Omanis; most others are Arab nationals. The student roll is expanding; fewer than 2% transfer to other schools each year. Virtually all graduating students go on to higher education, mainly to Britain, the United States, or to Oman's own Sultan Qaboos University.
The Sultan's School year extends to 36 working weeks between the end of August and early June. School days are Saturday to Wednesday. Hours of attendance are 08: 00-14: 45 or 15: 45 for Grades 1-12 and 08: 00-12: 00 for Kindergarten.
The Sultan's School campus of 250, 000 square metres contains 36 classrooms, a library, six science labs, three computer labs, a cafeteria, purpose-built suites of rooms for art and music, a mosque, a boarding department (for scholarship students aged 11-18+ only) and staff accommodation. Sports facilities include football, netball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and recent additions include a sports hall (42m by 24m), a large gymnasium/auditorium, a heated/cooled swimming pool, and a full size grass pitch and an athletics track at the Sultan's School.
